What E53 actually means
The control board can't trust its own reading of the circuit that powers the drum motor, so it has shut the machine down mid-cycle with the door locked.
Inside the main control board there's a monitoring ("sensing") line that watches the triac switching power to the motor. On this fault the board is reading a stuck signal — permanently high or permanently low — instead of the varying value it expects, so it can no longer tell whether the motor is being powered or not. Rather than risk driving the drum blind, it blocks the cycle and keeps the door locked. On some inverter-motor Electrolux machines the same code is used for a supply undervoltage to the motor control board, which behaves similarly: motor stopped, cycle held.
What usually causes it
- Faulty main control board (by far the most common)
- Damaged or chafed motor wiring upsetting the sensing circuit
- Breakdown of insulation in the motor windings or its wiring
- Poor connection between the motor control board and the main board
- Mains supply outside the acceptable range on inverter models
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a fresh cycle rather than resuming the old one — this code normally needs the cycle reset, not just a pause
- Make sure the machine is plugged straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead or adaptor
- If the door stays locked, wait for the interlock to release before pulling at it — never force the door
