What E50 actually means
The machine has stopped because the drum motor isn't turning or isn't reporting back that it's turning.
The control board drives the motor and reads a speed signal back from it. If that signal is missing, or the board's own motor-driving circuit has failed short, the machine retries four times at five-minute intervals, waits twenty minutes, then makes one last attempt — if the drum still won't turn it abandons the programme and shows this code. From the outside you usually see a machine that fills and heats but never tumbles, or one that sits doing nothing for long stretches before quitting.
What usually causes it
- Worn motor brushes on the drum motor
- Failed speed sensor (tachometer) on the motor
- Damaged motor-driving component on the main control board
- Broken or chafed wiring between board and motor
- Motor windings failed
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and start a short programme — this clears a one-off lock-out.
- Check nothing has jammed the drum: with the machine off, turn the drum by hand and feel for stiffness, grinding or an obstruction such as a wire or coin trapped at the edge.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
