What E74 actually means
The machine's wash temperature sensor isn't reading properly \u2014 the water isn't heating up as expected, so the machine gives up on heating and carries on washing cold.
During a heated wash, the control board watches the temperature sensor (NTC) fitted to the outer tub. If the temperature doesn't climb by the expected amount within the expected time, it assumes the sensor isn't sitting in its correct position on the tub and logs E74. Heating is then skipped for the rest of the cycle, so your washing gets rinsed and spun but never warmed.
What E74 looks like on a Electrolux washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washing machine, E74 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Not heating the water
- Washing coming out cold
- Cycle takes far longer than it should
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Temperature sensor pushed out of its seat on the tub, often after previous work on the machine
- Faulty temperature sensor giving a reading outside the permitted range
- Failed heating element, so the water never warms and the sensor reading never changes
- Wiring or connector problem between the sensor and the control board
- Control board misreading the sensor input
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Run the cycle again after turning the machine off at the wall for a minute \u2014 note that this code will not clear by switching off, so you'll need to reset or cancel the cycle, or press start/pause at the end
- Feel the door glass towards the end of a hot wash: if it's cold, the water genuinely isn't heating, which is worth telling the engineer
- Check whether the clothes come out clean but cold \u2014 that pattern confirms heating is being skipped rather than a full breakdown

Can I fix Electrolux E74 myself?
There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Run the cycle again after turning the machine off at the wall for a minute \u2014 note that this code will not clear by switching off, so you'll need to reset or cancel the cycle, or press start/pause at the end.

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
How much does it cost to repair Electrolux E74?
£66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Tried the checks and it's still showing E74?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
