What E84 actually means
The control board has lost a sensible reading from the circuit that switches the recirculation pump, so the machine drains, unlocks the door and stops.
Inside the main control board there is a monitoring circuit that watches the switch (triac) feeding the recirculation pump — the pump that sprays water back over the load. The board expects that signal to change as the pump is switched on and off; on this fault it sits permanently at one level, so the board can no longer trust its own pump control. It runs a safety drain, releases the door and blocks the cycle.
What E84 looks like on a Electrolux washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Electrolux washing machine, E84 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A fault on the main control board itself — by far the most common finding
- Damage to the board's pump switching circuit after a water leak or damp
- A power surge or spike having damaged the control electronics
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a cycle — this code can sometimes be cleared, and if it returns straight away it is genuine
- Clear the drain filter and check the drain hose is not kinked, so the machine can complete its drain
- Close the door firmly and make sure nothing is trapped in the seal before restarting
Common questions about Electrolux E84
What does E84 mean on a Electrolux washing machine?
The control board has lost a sensible reading from the circuit that switches the recirculation pump, so the machine drains, unlocks the door and stops. Inside the main control board there is a monitoring circuit that watches the switch (triac) feeding the recirculation pump — the pump that sprays water back over the load. The board expects that signal to change as the pump is switched on and off; on this fault it sits permanently at one level, so the board can no longer trust its own pump control. It runs a safety drain, releases the door and blocks the cycle.
Can I fix Electrolux E84 myself?
There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a cycle — this code can sometimes be cleared, and if it returns straight away it is genuine.
- Clear the drain filter and check the drain hose is not kinked, so the machine can complete its drain.
- Close the door firmly and make sure nothing is trapped in the seal before restarting.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E84?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
