Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E84 actually means

The control board has lost a sensible reading from the circuit that switches the recirculation pump, so the machine drains, unlocks the door and stops.

Inside the main control board there is a monitoring circuit that watches the switch (triac) feeding the recirculation pump — the pump that sprays water back over the load. The board expects that signal to change as the pump is switched on and off; on this fault it sits permanently at one level, so the board can no longer trust its own pump control. It runs a safety drain, releases the door and blocks the cycle.

What usually causes it

  • A fault on the main control board itself — by far the most common finding
  • Damage to the board's pump switching circuit after a water leak or damp
  • A power surge or spike having damaged the control electronics

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a cycle — this code can sometimes be cleared, and if it returns straight away it is genuine
  2. Clear the drain filter and check the drain hose is not kinked, so the machine can complete its drain
  3. Close the door firmly and make sure nothing is trapped in the seal before restarting

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
