What E31 actually means
The main control board has lost communication with the Cool On Demand sensor board, so the fridge can no longer read that part of the system.
E31 is a communication error between the main control and the separate Cool On Demand sensor board. In other words the two boards are no longer talking to each other — usually a connector or wiring problem between them, or one of the boards itself. The cooling side may well carry on running, but that function can't be relied on while the error is present.
What E31 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Flavel fridge freezer, E31 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Not cooling
- Freezer not freezing
- Ice building up at the back
- Food going off in the fridge
- Running constantly and never getting cold
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A plug or connector between the two boards worked loose
- Damaged or chafed wiring in the harness linking them
- A failed Cool On Demand sensor board
- A fault on the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up — a one-off communication glitch can clear
- Note whether the fridge and freezer are still holding temperature, and keep an eye on the food; move anything valuable if temperatures start climbing
Which Flavel models show E31
E31 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
