What E02 actually means

The temperature sensor on the fridge side's cooling coil has stopped giving the control board a sensible reading.

Each compartment has sensors clipped to it — one reading the air, one reading the evaporator (the cold coil that does the actual chilling). E02 is the control board reporting that the fresh food compartment's evaporator sensor is out of range or its circuit is broken, usually because the sensor itself has failed or its plug has come loose. The appliance doesn't shut down: it falls back on a default running pattern using what readings it still has, so it normally keeps cooling, but defrost timing and fridge temperature stop being properly controlled.

What E02 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer

What usually causes it

The fresh food evaporator sensor itself has failed
Its connector has worked loose or been disturbed at the control board
Damaged or chafed sensor wiring inside the cabinet
Water or ice ingress around the sensor and its plug
Less often, a fault on the control board reading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on — if the reading was a momentary glitch the code may clear
Note what is actually happening: whether the fridge is still getting cold, over-cooling, or icing up, as that tells the engineer a lot
Check the fridge door is closing fully and not being held ajar by an overfilled shelf or drawer, which can produce icing that's easily blamed on the sensor
Keep food out of the fridge's air vents at the back of the compartment
