What E11 actually means

The temperature sensor that watches the cooling coil behind the convertible "multizone" compartment has stopped giving the control board a sensible reading.

These fridge freezers have a switchable compartment — the one you can set to fridge or freezer temperatures — and it has its own evaporator with a sensor clipped to it. That sensor tells the board how cold the coil is and when to run a defrost. When the reading goes open-circuit, short-circuit or wildly out of range, the board flags E11 and falls back on a fixed timed pattern, so the multizone drawer may run too warm, too cold, or ice up.

What E11 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Flavel fridge freezer, E11 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Fridge freezer door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded plug on the sensor lead behind the compartment
  • The sensor itself has failed and reads out of range
  • Damaged or chafed sensor wiring inside the cabinet
  • Heavy frost or water ingress around the sensor and its connector
  • Less often, a fault on the control board that reads the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on — occasionally the code was logged from a one-off glitch and does not return
  2. Check the multizone compartment is set to the temperature you actually want, and note whether it is holding it
  3. Make sure food and packaging are not jammed against the back wall or over the air vents, and that the drawer or door shuts fully
  4. Keep an eye on food in that compartment while you wait for a repair, and move anything you cannot risk losing to the main freezer

Which Flavel models show E11

E11 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
