What E16 actually means
The fan that circulates cold air around the fridge (fresh food) side has stopped reporting back to the control board, so the appliance has flagged a fault with it.
The fresh food compartment fan pushes chilled air from the evaporator into the fridge section. On these models the fan sends a speed signal back to the control board, and when that signal stops or reads wrong /u2014 fan stalled, blocked, or the wiring to it broken /u2014 the board logs E16. The freezer side often carries on working normally, so the usual complaint is a fridge compartment that is warmer than it should be, sometimes with patchy cooling top to bottom.
What E16 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Flavel fridge freezer, E16 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Fridge freezer door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Fridge freezer not draining
- Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Fan blades jammed or rubbing on a build-up of ice around the fan housing
- Worn or seized fan motor
- Loose or damaged wiring plug on the fan
- Food or packaging pushed against the air outlet at the back of the fridge, stalling airflow
- Fault on the control board reading the fan's feedback signal
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Move food and packaging away from the air vents at the back and top of the fridge compartment so air can circulate freely
- Check the door is closing and sealing properly /u2014 warm humid air getting in is what causes the ice build-up that jams the fan
- Avoid opening the doors more than necessary and let hot food cool before putting it in, as the guidance notes for fan faults
- Switch off at the socket for a minute and back on to see whether the code clears
- If you suspect ice around the fan, empty the appliance and leave it switched off with the doors open to defrost fully, then run it again
Which Flavel models show E16
E16 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Flavel E16 myself?
There are 5 checks you can safely do yourself first.
- Move food and packaging away from the air vents at the back and top of the fridge compartment so air can circulate freely.
- Check the door is closing and sealing properly /u2014 warm humid air getting in is what causes the ice build-up that jams the fan.
- Avoid opening the doors more than necessary and let hot food cool before putting it in, as the guidance notes for fan faults.
- Switch off at the socket for a minute and back on to see whether the code clears.
- If you suspect ice around the fan, empty the appliance and leave it switched off with the doors open to defrost fully, then run it again.

£66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Tried the checks and it's still showing E16?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
