What E13 actually means
The fan that circulates cold air around the freezer section isn't turning as it should, and the appliance has flagged it.
Each of these fridge freezers uses a fan inside the freezer compartment to push cold air off the evaporator and around the food, and on the wiring used here the fan reports back to the control board. When that feedback stops or the fan stalls, E13 appears. The compressor generally keeps running, but without air movement the cold stays trapped at the evaporator — so the freezer warms up unevenly and frost builds up where the air should be flowing.
What E13 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Flavel fridge freezer, E13 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Fridge freezer door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Fridge freezer not draining
- Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Ice or frost build-up jamming the fan blade
- Food packaging or an over-filled drawer pressed against the fan housing
- Failed freezer fan motor
- Loose or displaced plug on the fan's feedback wiring at the control board
- Control board not reading the fan's feedback signal
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Take out anything packed tightly against the back wall or top of the freezer, where the air outlets are, and leave a gap for air to move.
- Switch off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and see whether the code returns.
- If there is heavy frost inside, empty the freezer and let it defrost fully with the door open — a blade frozen solid sometimes frees itself and the code clears.
- Check the freezer door is closing and sealing properly; warm damp air getting in is what causes the frost that jams the fan.
- While the fault is present, keep door openings short and don't put warm food in — the advice, and it limits how far the temperature drifts.
Which Flavel models show E13
E13 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E13?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
