What E54 actually means

The ice maker hasn't got cold enough to release ice, and after roughly 25 hours of trying the fridge freezer has given up and flagged it.

The control board watches the temperature at the ice maker and waits for it to drop far enough for the ice to be tipped out into the bin. On these Flavel models the software allows 1500 minutes — about 25 hours — and if the pouring temperature still hasn't been reached in that time it logs E54. The rest of the appliance normally carries on cooling as usual; what you notice is no ice, or a tray of slush rather than proper cubes.

What E54 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Flavel fridge freezer, E54 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Fridge freezer door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Not heating the water
  • Washing coming out cold
  • Cycle takes far longer than it should

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Freezer running warmer than it should, so the ice mould never reaches release temperature
  • Door or drawer not sealing properly, letting warm air in
  • Air flow to the ice maker blocked by packed-in food or frost build-up
  • Faulty temperature sensor at the ice maker giving the board a false reading
  • Ice maker motor or heater fault preventing the cycle completing

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Check the freezer is actually reaching its set temperature and hasn't been left on a warm setting
  2. Make sure the door closes fully and the seal is clean and not trapped on packaging
  3. Clear food away from the vents inside the freezer so air can circulate to the ice maker
  4. Take out the ice bin and check it isn't jammed with a clump of frozen-together ice
  5. If there's heavy frost inside, defrost the freezer fully and let it run again
  6. Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to see whether the warning clears once temperatures recover

Which Flavel models show E54

E54 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Flavel E54 myself?

There are 6 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Check the freezer is actually reaching its set temperature and hasn't been left on a warm setting.
  2. Make sure the door closes fully and the seal is clean and not trapped on packaging.
  3. Clear food away from the vents inside the freezer so air can circulate to the ice maker.
  4. Take out the ice bin and check it isn't jammed with a clump of frozen-together ice.
  5. If there's heavy frost inside, defrost the freezer fully and let it run again.
  6. Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on, to see whether the warning clears once temperatures recover.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
