Flavel E01 fridge freezer: what it means & what to check

What E01 actually means

The freezer's evaporator temperature sensor is no longer giving the control board a sensible reading, so the fridge freezer can't monitor the cold plate behind the freezer's back wall.

There are two sensors involved in the freezer: one reads the air inside the compartment, the other clips onto the evaporator (the cold plate hidden behind the rear panel) and tells the board when to run a defrost. E01 is the evaporator sensor one — the board is seeing an out-of-range or open-circuit reading from it. The appliance normally keeps cooling on a fallback pattern using the air sensor instead, so food stays frozen for now, but defrosts are no longer being timed properly and frost will gradually build on the evaporator until airflow suffers and the fridge side starts to warm up.

What E01 looks like on a Flavel fridge freezer

What usually causes it

A loose or corroded plug on the freezer evaporator sensor — this is the most common finding and needs nothing more than reseating
The sensor itself gone open-circuit or drifted out of range
Chafed or broken sensor wiring where it passes behind the freezer liner
Damp getting into the sensor connector after heavy frosting or a previous manual defrost
Less often, a fault on the main control board reading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute and back on — if the reading was a momentary glitch the code will clear
Check the freezer isn't heavily frosted up at the back and that vents aren't blocked by packed-in food, so what airflow there is isn't being made worse
Make sure the door is closing and sealing properly, as warm air getting in accelerates the icing this fault causes
