What E08 actually means

The machine hasn't got enough water in the drum in the time it expects, so it has stopped and flagged a water supply problem.

Grundig uses E08 for a water cut-off: the machine has opened the inlet valve, waited, and the water level sensor hasn't seen the level rise as it should. The same code also covers the machine draining water away as fast as it fills it, or a fault in the valve or pump control on the main board. In practice the cycle stalls early, usually before the drum starts turning properly.

What usually causes it

  • Tap to the machine turned off or only part open
  • Mains water pressure too low (Grundig want at least 1 bar)
  • Blocked or restricted inlet filter where the fill hose meets the machine, or a kinked fill hose
  • Inlet valve not opening, so no water enters at all
  • Drain hose pushed too far down the standpipe, siphoning water out as it fills
  • Fault on the control board driving the valve or drain pump

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Check the water tap behind the machine is fully open, and run a nearby cold tap to see whether pressure is normal
  2. Look along the fill hose for kinks or crushing where the machine sits against the wall
  3. Make sure the drain hose isn't pushed deep into the standpipe or lying in water in a sink
  4. Turn the machine off at the socket for a minute, switch back on and restart a short programme

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
