What E08 actually means

The machine hasn't got enough water in the drum in the time it expects, so it has stopped and flagged a water supply problem.

Grundig uses E08 for a water cut-off: the machine has opened the inlet valve, waited, and the water level sensor hasn't seen the level rise as it should. The same code also covers the machine draining water away as fast as it fills it, or a fault in the valve or pump control on the main board. In practice the cycle stalls early, usually before the drum starts turning properly.

What E08 looks like on a Grundig washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E08 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill
  • Stops right at the start of the cycle

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Tap to the machine turned off or only part open
  • Mains water pressure too low (Grundig want at least 1 bar)
  • Blocked or restricted inlet filter where the fill hose meets the machine, or a kinked fill hose
  • Inlet valve not opening, so no water enters at all
  • Drain hose pushed too far down the standpipe, siphoning water out as it fills
  • Fault on the control board driving the valve or drain pump

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Check the water tap behind the machine is fully open, and run a nearby cold tap to see whether pressure is normal
  2. Look along the fill hose for kinks or crushing where the machine sits against the wall
  3. Make sure the drain hose isn't pushed deep into the standpipe or lying in water in a sink
  4. Turn the machine off at the socket for a minute, switch back on and restart a short programme

Which Grundig models show E08

E08 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Can I fix Grundig E08 myself?

There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Check the water tap behind the machine is fully open, and run a nearby cold tap to see whether pressure is normal.
  2. Look along the fill hose for kinks or crushing where the machine sits against the wall.
  3. Make sure the drain hose isn't pushed deep into the standpipe or lying in water in a sink.
  4. Turn the machine off at the socket for a minute, switch back on and restart a short programme.

This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.
