Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E10 actually means

The machine has spotted a fault in the circuit on its main control board that powers the door lock, so it won't run a cycle.

On Grundig machines E10 is logged when the switching device on the control board that feeds the door interlock reads as short circuit — in other words the board thinks the lock is being powered when it shouldn't be. Because the machine can no longer trust that it can lock and unlock the door safely, it halts rather than filling. Typically the door either stays locked after a stopped cycle or the programme refuses to start at all.

What E10 looks like on a Grundig washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E10 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A fault on the main control board in the door lock switching circuit
  • A failed or partly seized door interlock dragging the circuit down
  • A door that is jammed or not closing fully, so the lock keeps being driven
  • Moisture or a damaged connection at the door lock
  • A power surge or brownout that has damaged the control board

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a short programme — one-off glitches do clear this way
  2. Check nothing is trapped in the door seal and that the door shuts with a firm click, with no laundry caught in the catch
  3. If the drum still holds water, run a drain or spin only once the door will close properly

Which Grundig models show E10

E10 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
