What E22 actually means
The control panel display and the main circuit board have stopped talking to each other, so the machine can't show you anything or take instructions properly.
E22 is a communication fault between the display card behind the front panel and the main control board. This code starts from the symptom of a blank screen — no image at all — with the machine logging E22 because the expected signal from the display never arrives. Because the two boards are no longer in step, the machine won't run a programme reliably even though the wash side of it may be perfectly healthy.
What E22 looks like on a Grundig washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E22 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
- Machine tripping the electrics
- E22 flashing on the display
- Beeping and showing E22
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A failed display card behind the control panel
- A loose or damaged ribbon/communication lead between the display and the main board
- A fault on the main control board itself
- Damp or moisture behind the fascia affecting the display card connections
- A mains supply disturbance that has left the boards out of sync
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — an occasional one-off communication glitch clears this way
- Check the display genuinely is dead rather than dimmed, in normal room light, before assuming the worst
- Make sure the plug and socket are sound and the machine isn't running through a damaged extension lead
Which Grundig models show E22
E22 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
