What E28 actually means
The machine isn't getting confirmation that the door has locked, so it refuses to start the wash.
Before any Grundig washer will fill and run, the control board has to see a signal back from the door interlock telling it the door is locked shut. On E28 that confirmation signal never arrives, so the cycle is halted at the very start. The usual symptom is a machine that appears dead in the water — the door may click but nothing else happens, and no water goes in.
What usually causes it
- Fault on the main control board, which is what Grundig's own diagnosis flow points to for this code
- Faulty door lock (interlock) unit not reporting back
- Damaged or loose wiring between the door lock and the board
- Door not physically closing far enough for the lock to engage
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Push the door firmly shut and listen for the lock to click, then try starting a programme again
- Check nothing is trapped in the door seal or caught in the catch — a sleeve or a bra strap will hold the door off
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and retry; the odd one-off signal glitch will clear
