What E45 actually means
The washing machine's control board has lost the settings file that tells it how to run your model, so it refuses to start.
Every Grundig control board is loaded with a variables file — the data that tells it which programmes, motor and sensors this particular machine has. E45 means the board either cannot find that file or is reading it as invalid, so it shuts down rather than run blind. The usual picture is a machine that does nothing at all with the programme selector LEDs flashing.
What E45 looks like on a Grundig washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E45 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only
- No function at all
- Dead — nothing lights up
- Lights flashing and nothing happening
- Programme won't start
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Corrupted or missing configuration data on the main control board
- A fault in the board's memory chip
- A previously fitted replacement board that was never programmed for this model
- Electrical disturbance or a power surge that scrambled the stored settings
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — occasionally the board reads its data correctly on a fresh start
- Check the machine is on its own socket and not running through an extension lead or adaptor
Which Grundig models show E45
E45 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
