What E05 actually means
The machine can't get the water out — the drain pump either isn't running or is blocked.
Grundig's control board watches the drain pump. If it commands the pump and gets nothing back — pump jammed, blocked with debris, rotor seized, or the board's pump circuit itself gone open — it halts the cycle and shows E05. You'll usually meet it at the end of a wash or before the spin: drum still full of water, programme dragging on, no spin.
What E05 looks like on a Grundig washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water
- Standing water in the bottom
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
- Turns one way only
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Drain pump filter blocked with lint, coins, hair grips or a bra wire
- Kinked, blocked or badly fitted drain hose
- Something jammed in the pump impeller stopping it turning
- Failed drain pump (worn or seized motor)
- Low mains supply voltage, which can stop the pump starting properly
- Fault in the pump circuit on the control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then retry a drain or spin programme.
- Bail out standing water, then open the flap at the bottom front, drain the machine down via the filter and clear the filter thoroughly — you'd be surprised what comes out.
- Check the drain hose isn't kinked, crushed behind the machine or pushed too far down the standpipe.
- Check the standpipe or sink trap the hose drains into isn't blocked.
Which Grundig models show E05
E05 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Grundig E05
What does E05 mean on a Grundig washing machine?
The machine can't get the water out — the drain pump either isn't running or is blocked. Grundig's control board watches the drain pump. If it commands the pump and gets nothing back — pump jammed, blocked with debris, rotor seized, or the board's pump circuit itself gone open — it halts the cycle and shows E05. You'll usually meet it at the end of a wash or before the spin: drum still full of water, programme dragging on, no spin.
Can I fix Grundig E05 myself?
There are 4 checks you can safely do yourself first.
This sometimes clears with those checks. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly.

Tried the checks and it's still showing E05?
This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
