What E03 actually means
The machine has spotted that the heating element is staying on when it shouldn't, so it has stopped the wash to avoid boiling your laundry.
Grundig's control board watches the heater and expects to be able to switch it off once the water reaches the set temperature. With E03 it has found the heater still drawing power outside of the heating stage, so it halts the programme rather than let the water keep climbing. The classic customer complaint alongside this code is laundry coming out far too hot and looking worn or faded.
What E03 looks like on a Grundig washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E03 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Not heating the water
- Washing coming out cold
- Cycle takes far longer than it should
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- A failed heater relay or triac on the main control board sticking in the 'on' position
- A wiring fault to the heating element keeping it live
- A faulty temperature sensor (NTC) misreading the water temperature
- A damaged control board after a power surge
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and see if the code returns on a short cold wash.
- Note whether the laundry or the door glass is unusually hot — that detail helps the engineer confirm the diagnosis.
Which Grundig models show E03
E03 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
