Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E26 actually means

The control board's memory can't be read or written to, so the machine won't run a programme at all.

Every wash programme relies on settings stored in a memory chip (the EEPROM) on the main control board. When the board can't read that memory back correctly, it refuses to start rather than run blind — so the usual symptom is a machine that lights up and shows the code but does nothing else. Grundig's own service handbook goes straight from this code to replacing the main board, which tells you it is treated as an internal board fault rather than something with an external cause.

What E26 looks like on a Grundig washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E26 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start
  • Machine tripping the electrics
  • E26 flashing on the display
  • Beeping and showing E26

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A failed memory chip on the main control board
  • Corrupted stored settings on the board, often after a power surge or interruption
  • Damage to the board from a previous fault elsewhere in the machine, such as water or moisture ingress
  • A board that was replaced or reprogrammed and did not take the data correctly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Switch off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — if the memory read failed as a one-off, this occasionally clears it
  2. Check the machine is on its own socket and not run through an extension lead or adaptor, which can make the supply unreliable

Which Grundig models show E26

E26 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.

Common questions about Grundig E26

What does E26 mean on a Grundig washing machine?

Can I fix Grundig E26 myself?

There are 2 checks you can safely do yourself first.

  1. Switch off at the wall socket, leave it for a minute, then switch back on — if the memory read failed as a one-off, this occasionally clears it.
  2. Check the machine is on its own socket and not run through an extension lead or adaptor, which can make the supply unreliable.

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
