What E17 actually means

The machine has detected too much foam and has ended the cycle without properly rinsing your load.

Grundig machines watch for excessive suds during the wash and rinse stages. If there is too much foam, the control board stops the programme rather than carrying on rinsing, and shows E17. Grundig class this as a warning rather than a fault insing being skipped is the machine protecting itself, not a breakdown.

What E17 looks like on a Grundig washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Grundig washing machine, E17 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Not filling with water
  • No water going in
  • Takes for ever to fill
  • Stops right at the start of the cycle
  • No function at all
  • Dead — nothing lights up
  • Lights flashing and nothing happening
  • Programme won't start

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Too much detergent for the load size or water hardness
  • Hand-wash or non-machine detergent used in the drawer
  • Very lightly soiled or small loads with a full dose of detergent
  • Detergent left over from a previous wash still in the drawer or drum
  • Occasionally, a wash on a low-water eco programme with a heavy dose of liquid

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Run a rinse or spin programme with no detergent to clear the foam out
  2. Cut the detergent dose back about half of what you used last time, and follow the dose on the pack for your water hardness
  3. Check the detergent drawer is not clogged with old powder rinse it under the tap
  4. If you use liquid detergent, make sure the dosing insert is fitted correctly in the drawer
  5. Switch off at the wall for a minute before restarting the cycle

Which Grundig models show E17

E17 means the same thing on all 4 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
