What E18 actually means

The washing machine has decided the load in the drum is too unevenly spread to spin safely, so it has ended the programme without a proper spin.

Grundig machines run a balance check before each high-speed spin. If the laundry has bunched to one side, the machine repeatedly stops and tries to redistribute it — which is why the time left on the display often creeps up — and if it still can't balance the drum it abandons the spin and shows E18. Grundig's own service bulletins class this as a warning rather than a fault, so there is usually nothing broken.

What usually causes it

  • One heavy item, like a duvet, towel or pair of jeans, on its own in the drum
  • Very small load that can't spread itself around the drum
  • Bedding or a large sheet wrapped into a tight ball
  • Overloaded drum so the washing can't move
  • Machine not sitting level, or standing on a soft or uneven floor, exaggerating the wobble

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door, shake the washing out and spread it evenly around the drum, then run a spin again
  2. Add a couple of towels if you are washing one bulky item on its own
  3. Unravel anything that has balled up inside a duvet cover or sheet
  4. Take some washing out if the drum is packed tight
  5. Check the machine isn't rocking on the floor and that nothing is wedged under a foot
  6. Clean the pump filter — a slow drain leaves water in the tub and can make balancing worse

When to call someone

This often clears with the checks above, and rarely needs an engineer. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
