Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E05 actually means

The drum motor isn't running as the control board expects, so the machine has stopped rather than carry on with the wash.

On this Haden the control board watches the motor and its speed feedback. If the drum doesn't turn, or doesn't reach the speed being asked for — most often when it tries to step up to spin — the board shuts the cycle down and shows this code. You'll usually find the machine sitting with water still in it and a drum that won't move.

What usually causes it

  • A loose or corroded plug on the motor wiring
  • Worn motor brushes or a failing motor
  • A speed sensor that isn't reporting back to the board
  • Something jamming the drum, such as a coin or wire from a bra between drum and tub
  • A fault on the main control board's motor drive

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a rinse and spin — a one-off electrical glitch will clear
  2. Take the washing out and turn the drum by hand: if it's stiff, grinds or won't move, something is jammed and it needs looking at
  3. Check the load wasn't heavily overloaded, which can stall the drum on start-up
  4. If there's water sitting in the drum, run a drain or spin-only programme first so the machine isn't left full

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
