What E36 actually means

The machine has found a break in the circuit that heats the water, so it has stopped rather than carry on washing cold.

The control board checks the wash heater — the element sitting under the drum that warms the water — and on E36 it is reading an open circuit, meaning no electrical path through it. The fault for a non-heating machine works through the temperature sensor, then the heater's connections, then the element itself, then the board. In practice the element has usually failed internally.
