What E36 actually means
The machine has found a break in the circuit that heats the water, so it has stopped rather than carry on washing cold.
The control board checks the wash heater — the element sitting under the drum that warms the water — and on E36 it is reading an open circuit, meaning no electrical path through it. Haden's own fault tree for a non-heating machine works through the temperature sensor, then the heater's connections, then the element itself, then the board. In practice the element has usually failed internally.
What usually causes it
- Wash heater element burnt out or broken internally
- Loose or corroded connector between the heater and the control board
- Damaged wiring to the element
- Control board fault (least common)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a cold wash — if it runs cold but faults on a heated programme, that points at the element.
- Note whether washes have felt cold recently; it is worth telling the engineer.
