What E10 actually means
The dryer has stopped because it isn't sensing a normal load of damp washing heating up as it should — on some Hoover models the same code means the display and main control board have stopped talking to each other.
On the majority of Hoover dryers, E10 appears during the heating part of the cycle when the drum temperature climbs past around 80°C without the usual damp load absorbing the heat. The control assumes the drum is empty or the airflow is choked with fluff and shuts the heater down to protect the machine. On some newer Hoover models the same number is used for a loss of communication between the main ("Cuore") control module and the display board, which looks identical to the owner — the machine dies mid-cycle with E10 on the panel.
What usually causes it
- Started with an empty or very lightly loaded drum
- Fluff clogging the filters or the condenser, so heat can't escape
- Fluff built up inside the ducting and around the fan
- Faulty temperature sensor reporting too high a reading
- Broken connection between the display board and the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Check there is actually washing in the drum, and a reasonable load rather than one or two items
- Take out the fluff filter, rinse it under the tap, dry it and refit it
- On condenser models, pull out the condenser unit at the bottom, rinse it clear of fluff and refit it fully seated
- Empty the water tank
- Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then power it back up and run a normal cycle to see if the code returns
