What E22 actually means
The dryer's control board cannot switch the compressor on and off properly, so it has shut the drying cycle down.
On these heat pump Hoover dryers the compressor is what produces the heat, and it is switched by a relay on the main control board (Hoover call it the "cuore" module). When the board sees that relay failing to do its job, or gets no proper response from the compressor circuit, it stops the cycle and shows this code. In practice the owner usually notices the drum turning with little or no heat, or the programme ending far too early with clothes still damp.
What E22 looks like on a Hoover tumble dryer

What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a programme — if the code returns straight away it is a genuine fault
- Empty the water container and clear the fluff filter, then check the heat pump filter area is not clogged, as poor airflow makes the heat pump work harder
- Check the machine has space around it and is not shut in a tight cupboard where it cannot breathe
