Hoover E09 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E09 actually means

The dryer has spotted a problem with its thermal cut-out — the safety device that kills the heater if the machine gets too hot — and has stopped rather than carry on heating.

On these Hoover condenser dryers the control board watches the thermal cut-out on the heater assembly. If that circuit reads as open, or the board can't confirm it is intact, the drying cycle is halted and E09 is displayed. It is a protective stop: the dryer will often still tumble but you'll get little or no heat, and clothes come out damp.

What E09 looks like on a Hoover tumble dryer

Machine door won't open
Door won't lock or click shut
Door lock light flashing
Door stuck shut with the load inside
Won't start even with the door closed

What usually causes it

Thermal cut-out has tripped or failed after the dryer overheated
Blocked filters or a clogged condenser choking the airflow, which is what caused the overheat in the first place
Thick fluff build-up inside the cabinet and around the heater
Damaged or loose wiring at the cut-out
Fault on the control board misreading the circuit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean the door filter and the secondary fluff filter thoroughly — a thin film of lint is enough to restrict airflow
Rinse out the condenser unit if your model has a removable one, and check its seal is seated properly
Empty the water tank
Make sure the room isn't sealed tight and nothing is blocking the vents around the machine
Switch off at the wall for a minute, then power back up to see if the code clears
