Hoover E21 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E21 actually means

The dryer has spotted a problem with the heating side of things and stopped rather than carry on drying cold.

On Hoover condenser dryers, E21 is a heating fault. In practice it comes up when the heating circuit isn't behaving as the control board expects "" most often because the thermal cut-out on top of the heater has tripped after the machine overheated, or because the element itself has failed. On some models it is also flagged when water is sitting in the condenser area or isn't being moved to the reservoir, and on others it points at the heater control relay on the electronic module. The clothes come out damp and barely warm.

What usually causes it

Overheating from clogged filters, which blows the thermal cut-out above the heater
Failed heating element
Water left in the condenser area or a condenser pump not clearing it to the tank
Cycle interrupted repeatedly by opening the door, so the dryer never cools down
Heater control relay on the electronic module gone faulty

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Clean the door filter and any secondary fluff filter thoroughly "" this is the single most common root cause
Unplug the dryer, take out the condenser, rinse the fluff off it and leave it to dry for half an hour before refitting
Empty the water container and check it isn't cracked or leaking
Clear fluff from the condenser housing and make sure the seal sits properly when you refit it
Leave the machine unplugged for a minute, then power up and try a short cycle
Let a cycle finish rather than opening the door partway through
