Hoover E05 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E05 actually means

The dryer has lost a sensible reading from the temperature sensor at the front of the drum, so it has stopped the drying cycle rather than run blind.

The front NTC is the small temperature sensor that tells the control board how hot the air in the drum is. If the board sees a short circuit, an open circuit, or a resistance that doesn't match what it expects, it halts the cycle and shows E05 \\\u2014 on some models the LEDs also flash together. Without that reading the dryer has no safe way to regulate heat, which is why it refuses to carry on.

What E05 looks like on a Hoover tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hoover tumble dryer, E05 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
Stops mid-cycle full of water
Standing water in the bottom

What usually causes it

The front NTC temperature sensor itself has failed
A loose or corroded plug on the sensor
Damaged or chafed wiring between the sensor and the control board
Less often, a fault on the main control board reading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
