What E13 actually means
The dryer has lost a sensible reading from one of its temperature sensors, so it has stopped rather than carry on drying blind.
E13 is logged when the control board sees the NTC temperature sensor circuit as either open or short — in other words no plausible temperature signal at all. On heat pump models the board also expects the compressor to be running and pulling the temperature up; if that isn't happening the readings won't add up either. Without a trustworthy temperature it can't control the heat, so it halts the cycle.
What E13 looks like on a Hoover tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Hoover tumble dryer, E13 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Machine not draining
- Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
- Stops mid-cycle full of water

What usually causes it
- A failed NTC temperature sensor
- A loose or corroded plug on the sensor wiring
- Damaged wiring between the sensor and the control board
- Compressor not starting or running properly on heat pump models
- Control board fault (less common)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the dryer off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a cycle again — occasionally it clears a one-off reading.
- Clean out the door filter and, on models that have one, the second lower filter and the heat pump filter cover. Hoover dryers clog with fluff quickly and poor airflow gives the sensors odd readings.
- Check the drum is empty of anything that shouldn't be in there and the door is closing properly.
