Miele F65 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What F65 actually means

The machine can't detect the cover for the drum light inside the door area, and Miele treats that as a fault worth stopping for.

On Miele models fitted with drum interior lighting, the lamp sits behind a protective cap. If that cap is missing or has come loose, the machine flags F65 and expects the cap to be refitted or replaced. It's a safety-related detection rather than a washing or draining problem, which is why an otherwise healthy machine can throw it.

What F65 looks like on a Miele washing machine

What usually causes it

The drum light cap has come loose or fallen off, often into the drum or the door seal
A cap damaged or cracked during a previous repair or cleaning
Cap not properly clipped back after a lamp change
Fault in the detection circuit for the lighting, so the machine reports a missing cap that is in fact present

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Look inside the drum and along the folds of the rubber door seal for a small clear or translucent plastic cap that has dropped out — if you find it, keep it for the engineer rather than trying to force it back in
Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute and switch it back on to see whether the code clears
Don't run a wash with a loose piece of plastic tumbling in the drum, as it can end up in the pump
