What F92 actually means

The machine hasn't managed to empty its water within the time it allows, so it has stopped rather than carry on with a drum full of water.

Miele monitors how long draining takes and expects the water level to fall away within a set window. When the level sensor still reports water present after that, the cycle halts with this code. Nine times out of ten it is a restriction somewhere in the drain path rather than the electronics.

What F92 looks like on a Miele washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Miele washing machine, F92 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Overfilling, or won't stop filling
  • Stops with water still inside
  • Fills and drains over and over
  • No function at all

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • A blockage in the sump hose between the drum and the pump
  • Debris caught in the drain pump itself / a jammed impeller
  • A kinked, blocked or badly routed waste hose to the standpipe or sink trap
  • An object stuck over the drum outlet hole
  • Less often, a faulty pressure (water level) switch reporting water that isn't there

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power it back on and try a drain or spin programme
  2. Clean out the fluff filter and drain pump area at the front, following the instructions in your handbook / the flap at the bottom of the machine
  3. Check the waste hose behind the machine isn't kinked, crushed against the wall or pushed too far down the standpipe
  4. If it drains into a sink trap, check the trap and spigot aren't blocked with grease
  5. Look inside the drum for anything obvious \u2014 coins, wire, bra underwires \u2014 that could have lodged in the outlet
