What F29 actually means

The steam heater in your Miele washing machine isn't working, so the machine has stopped the programme rather than carry on without steam.

F29 is logged when the control board expects the steam heating unit to come on and gets no response from it. On models with steam functions (SteamCare, crease-reduction and similar), the machine monitors that heater separately from the main wash heater, and if it stays inactive the cycle is halted. You'll usually see it on a steam-assisted programme while a normal cotton wash may still run.

What usually causes it

  • Failed steam heater unit
  • A broken or corroded connection to the steam heater
  • Faulty temperature sensor on the steam system telling the board the heater isn't working
  • Blocked or scaled steam water path so the heater isn't fed
  • Control electronics fault falsely reporting the heater inactive

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try the programme again — a one-off electronic glitch will clear this way.
  2. Check the water supply tap is fully open and the inlet hose isn't kinked behind the machine.
  3. Try a standard non-steam programme; if that runs normally, it confirms the fault is in the steam side and helps the engineer.

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
