What F64 actually means
The machine can no longer tell where the water routing valve is positioned, so it halts rather than risk sending water to the wrong place.
Miele machines with a water path control unit use a sensor to confirm the position of the mechanism that directs incoming water to the right dispenser compartment or into the drum. F64 means the control board is not getting a believable signal back from that path sensor. Because the machine cannot verify where water would go, it stops the programme instead of continuing blind.
What F64 looks like on a Miele washing machine
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Miele washing machine, F64 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on and restart a short programme — a one-off glitch will sometimes clear
- Note whether the fault appears at the same point each cycle (for instance as it takes water in), as that helps the engineer
