Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F63 actually means

The machine has lost control of the part that directs incoming water to the right place, so it has stopped rather than fill blind.

Miele washing machines route the incoming water through a control unit that decides which dispenser compartment or path the water takes for each stage of the programme. F63 means the machine's electronics are not getting the expected response from that water path control unit, so it cannot be sure where the water would go. It halts the cycle at that point rather than risk overfilling or flooding a compartment.

What usually causes it

  • A failed water path control unit (the valve assembly itself)
  • A loose or corroded connection to that unit
  • Limescale or detergent residue jamming the water path
  • A fault on the control electronics driving the unit

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and start a short programme — an occasional one-off glitch will clear
  2. Pull out the detergent drawer, wash it under the tap and clear any set detergent or softener sludge before refitting
  3. Check the inlet hose is not kinked behind the machine and the tap is fully open

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
