What F56 actually means
The machine tried to spin but couldn't get the drum above 400 rpm, so it gave up and flagged the spin as failed.
Miele monitors the drum speed during the final spin. If it can't reach at least 400 rpm, the control unit stops trying and shows F56 rather than risk hammering the bearings and suspension with a load it can't balance. You'll normally find the washing still soaking wet at the end of the cycle, sometimes sitting in a little water.
What usually causes it
- Load badly distributed — one heavy item, or a duvet or towels bunched to one side
- A very small load the drum can't balance out
- Worn motor carbon brushes (on models fitted with them), so the motor loses power at speed
- Wiring or connection fault at the motor
- Drive fault — motor, belt or tachometer/speed sensing
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door, shake out the washing and spread it evenly around the drum, then run a spin on its own
- Wash bulky single items like a duvet or a bath mat with a couple of towels for balance, not alone
- Check the machine isn't rocking — it should sit level and firm on the floor, not on a loose bit of flooring
- Turn it off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try a spin-only programme
- Clean the drain filter and check the drain hose isn't kinked, so water is leaving properly
