What F53 actually means
The machine has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum is turning, so it stops rather than spin blind.
Miele's control board relies on a speed sensor (tachometer) on the motor to know the drum's exact rpm at every stage of the cycle. When that reading goes missing or reads nonsense, the board cannot control the spin ramp safely, so it halts and shows F53. Typically you'll find the wash gets through the washing stage but the drum never spins up properly, or the machine cuts out with water still in the drum.
What usually causes it
- Faulty speed sensor on the motor
- Loose or damaged plug/wiring between the motor and the control board
- Motor fault affecting the sensor signal
- Control electronics not reading the sensor correctly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a short programme — an occasional one-off glitch will clear
- Check the drum turns freely by hand and there is nothing trapped between drum and casing
- If water is left in the drum, drain it via the filter/drain hose as described in your Miele handbook before moving the machine
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
