What E11 actually means
The machine has lost contact with the drum motor, so it won't turn the drum.
E11 means the control board is either getting no electrical connection to the motor, or no speed signal back from the tacho (the small sensor that tells the board how fast the motor is spinning). Because it can't confirm the motor is running properly, it stops the programme rather than risk running blind. Typical symptoms are a drum that won't rotate, a cycle that stops part way, or sudden jerky starts.
What usually causes it
- Failed or worn motor brushes on the drum motor
- Loose or corroded plug on the motor wiring
- Faulty tacho (speed sensor) on the motor
- Motor winding gone open circuit
- Fault on the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a spin cycle — sometimes clears a one-off glitch.
- Check nothing is jamming the drum, such as a stray coin or wire from clothing, by turning the drum by hand with the power off.
- Make sure the machine isn't overloaded and try a short spin with a lighter load.
When to call someone
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.
Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
