What E53 actually means
The dryer's control board has lost track of the drum motor's power circuit and has shut the cycle down.
On these boards the motor is switched by a triac, and a separate sensing circuit tells the board whether that switching is actually happening. When that sensing circuit reads wrong, the board can no longer trust what the motor is doing, so it stops the programme rather than keep running blind. The fault puts one cause against E53 and one only: the electronic control board itself.
What E53 looks like on a Zanussi tumble dryer
Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Zanussi tumble dryer, E53 usually shows up as one or more of these:
- Machine door won't open
- Door won't lock or click shut
- Door lock light flashing
- Door stuck shut with the load inside
- Won't start even with the door closed
- Drum not turning
- Won't spin
- Hums or buzzes but nothing moves
Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.
What usually causes it
- Faulty main electronic control board (the cause the manufacturer lists for this code)
- A one-off electrical glitch that has latched the alarm and needs clearing
- Damage to the board's motor switching section following a motor or wiring fault elsewhere
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Switch off at the wall socket, leave it a minute, then power up and start a cycle again — if the code came from a one-off glitch it may clear.
- Clear the lint filter and, if your model has one, the condenser filter, so the machine isn't restarting under strain.
- Listen when you press start: a humming noise with no drum movement points at a motor capacitor rather than the board, which is worth mentioning to the engineer.

Can I fix Zanussi E53 myself?
There are 3 checks you can safely do yourself first.
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried them.
How much does it cost to repair Zanussi E53?

Tried the checks and it's still showing E53?
This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. Then it wants someone who can open it up.
What it costs, before you call: the price is the same whatever the fault turns out to be — £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it, or £84 in total including VAT if it is put right on the visit and no parts are needed.
