What is actually happening
A washer dryer dries by condensing moisture against a flow of cold water rather than venting it, so drying depends on both the heater and the cold water supply working. Lint has nowhere to go in a machine that has no filter you can reach, so it collects internally — and on some makes that shows up as a specific fault code rather than simply poor drying.
The Hotpoint fault codes that point at this
A Hotpoint washer dryer will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to not drying:
- F01 — The control board has spotted a fault in the part of itself that switches power to the motor, so it has shut the cycle down rather than run the drum.
- F03 — The machine can't get a sensible reading of the water temperature, so it abandons the cycle rather than heat blind.
- F04 — The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out within the time it allows, so it's stopped with a drumful of water.
- F05 — The machine has tried to pump the water out, hasn't managed it in the time allowed, and has stopped with the drum still holding water.
- F08 — The machine has given up on heating the water (or the air, if it happened during drying) and has stopped the cycle.
- F09 — The machine's control board has lost or mismatched its own software settings, so it can't run a programme properly.
- F11 — The machine has lost the electrical connection to its drain pump, so it stops with water still in the drum.
- F12 — The two circuit boards inside the machine — the main control board and the display/control panel — have stopped talking to each other, so the washer dryer won't start or respond properly.

The usual causes on a Hotpoint washer dryer
- Internal lint build-up restricting airflow, which no accessible filter catches
- A failed drying element or heat pump, depending on the model
- A failed NTC sensor in the drying circuit, often reported as a code
- A restricted cold water feed, so the condenser cannot condense
