What is actually happening
This is different from a machine that will not spin: here the drum does not move at all, even at slow wash speed. On a belt-driven machine the belt has almost always come off or snapped, and the giveaway is that the motor can be heard running with nothing happening. On a direct-drive machine there is no belt, so the fault is the motor or its control.
The Hotpoint fault codes that point at this
A Hotpoint washing machine will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to drum not turning:
- F01 — The machine's main control board has flagged an electrical fault on the circuit that drives the drum motor, and it has stopped the cycle rather than risk running the motor.
- F02 — The machine has stopped because it isn't getting the drum to turn properly \u2014 the motor or the board that drives it isn't responding as expected.
- F03 — The machine can't get a sensible temperature reading from the water in the drum, so it stops rather than heat blindly.
- F04 — The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out in the time it expects, so it's stopped with the drum still full.
- F05 — The machine hasn't managed to pump the water out in the time it expects, so it has stopped with the drum still full.
- F06 — The machine can't confirm the door is locked, so it refuses to start een shlocked shut with water inside.
- F08 — The machine has a problem with the water heating side "the heater itself or the relay on the control board that switches it on " so it won't heat the wash and often stops partway through.
- F10 — The machine isn't seeing water arrive as expected, so it halts rather than carrying on with an empty or under-filled drum.

The usual causes on a Hotpoint washing machine
- A snapped or dislodged drive belt
- Worn motor carbon brushes, leaving too little power to turn a loaded drum
- A seized drum bearing
