What E31 actually means
The main control board has lost contact with the small sensor board that runs Beko's Cool On Demand feature.
On models fitted with Cool On Demand, a separate sensor board reports back to the main control. E31 means those two boards have stopped talking to each other, so the fridge flags a communication fault. Cooling itself is often still running, but the feature that depends on that board won't work properly and the code will keep showing until the link is restored.
What usually causes it
- A loose or partly unseated plug between the two boards
- A damaged or chafed connecting lead inside the cabinet
- A failed Cool On Demand sensor board
- A fault on the main control board
- Moisture or condensation around the board connections
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute, then back on — an occasional communication glitch clears on a restart
- Check the temperature readings and whether food is still cold and frozen, so you can tell the engineer whether cooling is affected
- Make sure the doors are closing fully and the appliance isn't jammed tight against a wall, so it isn't running hotter than normal while you wait

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above.
