What E01 actually means
The sensor that tells the fridge freezer how cold its freezer cooling coil is has stopped giving a sensible reading, so the control board can no longer manage defrosting properly.
Behind the freezer's back wall is an evaporator — the cold coil that does the actual freezing — and a small temperature sensor clipped to it. Beko's control board uses that reading to decide when to run the defrost heater and for how long. When the signal goes out of range or open-circuit, the board flags E1 (displayed as E01 on some models) and falls back to running the defrost heater on a fixed timed cycle instead, which is a safety net rather than a fix.
What usually causes it
- The evaporator sensor itself has failed or drifted out of range
- A loose or corroded plug where the sensor connects to the control board
- Damaged sensor wiring inside the rear of the freezer, often from ice movement
- A fault on the control board's sensor input
- Heavy frost or a past defrost failure that has damaged the sensor mounting
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — the fault clears itself if it was a momentary glitch, and Beko's own documents note that the stored error is cleared after a power interruption
- Check the freezer door is closing fully and the seal is not folded over or blocked by a drawer, as constant warm air makes any defrost problem worse
- Make sure the appliance has clear space at the back and the vents inside the freezer are not blocked with packets or frozen bags

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above.
