What E04 actually means
The freezer's automatic defrost heater hasn't done its job, so the machine is flagging that frost is going to build up on the freezer evaporator.
Beko's no-frost models run a heater at intervals to melt frost off the hidden freezer evaporator behind the back wall. The control board watches the defrost sensor during that cycle, and if the temperature never climbs as it should, it logs a defrost system failure and shows this code. Cooling itself isn't switched off, so the fridge carries on running cap by bit the evaporator ices over, the freezer fan gets blocked and temperatures start to drift up.
What usually causes it
- Failed freezer defrost heater element (the most common finding by a long way)
- Faulty or displaced defrost sensor giving the board a false reading
- Blown thermal cut-out/fuse in the defrost circuit
- A wiring or connector fault between the board and the heater
- Control board fault \u2014 rare, and often blamed wrongly
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on \u2014 an occasional one-off reading will clear
- Check the freezer door is shutting fully and the seal isn't being held open by an overfilled drawer, as warm air pulls in extra frost
- Look at the freezer's back wall: heavy ice build-up confirms the defrost isn't working and is worth mentioning when you book
- If ice has already built up, emptying the freezer and letting it defrost fully overnight will restore cooling for a while, though the fault will return
