What E12 actually means
The fridge freezer has decided its automatic defrost heating isn't working, so frost will build up on the evaporator and cooling will fall away.
Beko's control board runs a defrost cycle to melt frost off the evaporator coil behind the back wall of the freezer (or the MultiZone/"Joker" drawer on models fitted with one — Beko's own documents use E12 for both, depending on the model). If the board doesn't see the evaporator temperature rise as it should during that cycle, it flags E12. The compressor usually keeps running, so the appliance seems to work at first, but ice slowly blocks the airflow and temperatures creep up.
What usually causes it
- Failed defrost heater element in the freezer or MultiZone compartment
- Defrost thermostat or evaporator sensor not reading correctly
- Heavy ice build-up over the evaporator blocking the airflow
- Wiring or connector fault between the heater and the control board
- Control board fault (the least common of the group)
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute, then back on — on some models the code clears once the unit completes a good defrost cycle.
- Check the freezer door is closing fully and the seal isn't being held open by a drawer, bag or ice on the frame; warm air getting in makes frosting far worse.
- If you can see thick ice on the back wall of the freezer, empty the food out and let the appliance stand switched off with the door open until it has fully defrosted. That won't fix a dead heater but it tells you how bad the build-up is.
- Make sure there's clear space around the back and sides for air to get away.
