Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E14 actually means

The fan that circulates cold air through the multi-zone ("Joker") compartment — the drawer you can switch between fridge and freezer settings — has stopped reporting back to the control board.

This compartment uses a variable-speed 12V fan with a feedback wire, so the control board knows the moment the motor stalls or slows. When no signal comes back, it logs E14. The compartment will lose its even airflow, so temperatures in that drawer drift and frost tends to build unevenly on the evaporator behind it.

What usually causes it

  • The fan motor itself has failed or seized
  • Ice built up around the fan blade, jamming it
  • A loose or disturbed plug on the fan's feedback wiring
  • Fan blade fouled by packaging or an overfilled drawer
  • Control board not reading the fan's feedback signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Remember the fan is designed to stop while a door is open — that on its own is not a fault.
  2. Unload the multi-zone drawer and check nothing (bag, box, ice lump) is pressing against the back wall or blocking the vents.
  3. Turn the fridge freezer off at the wall for a minute, then back on. The self-test on power-up will clear the code if the fan is now turning.
  4. If the code returns and you can see heavy frost building in that compartment, empty it and let the appliance defrost fully before restarting.
  5. Give the appliance a few inches of clearance at the back and sides so it is not fighting a hot cabinet.

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
