What E31 actually means

During a drying programme the control board watches the air temperature through the condenser with an NTC temperature sensor. If that reading disappears altogether (open circuit) or reads as a dead short, the board can no longer tell how hot the air is, and rather than run the air heaters blind it flags the fault. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and try a drying programme again — an occasional one-off reading will clear
Run a wash-only programme (no drying) to confirm the washing side is unaffected, which is what we normally find with this code
If a drying cycle was interrupted, allow the machine to cool for an hour before retrying
