Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E81 actually means

The washing machine's main control board has faulted on the part of the circuit that powers the door lock, so it has stopped the programme rather than carry on.

Beko's own service notes list 81 as a door lock triac short circuit — the switching device on the control board that feeds power to the door interlock has failed short. Because the board can no longer be sure it is controlling the lock properly, it halts the wash and the programme never completes. The fix in the manufacturer's documentation is replacement of the control board.

What usually causes it

  • A failed switching device on the main control board
  • Power surge or spike damaging the board
  • Moisture or detergent ingress reaching the board
  • A short or damaged wiring to the door interlock overloading the board
  • A faulty door interlock that has taken the board out with it

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall socket, leave it a minute, then power it back up — a genuine board fault will bring the code straight back
  2. Check the door is closing and latching cleanly, with no laundry trapped in the seal

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
