What E16 actually means

The fan that circulates cold air around the fridge section isn't running as it should, so the control board has flagged it.

E16 is a fresh-food (fridge) fan fault. The fridge compartment relies on that fan to move chilled air off its evaporator and around the shelves, so when the board sees the fan not turning, or not turning at the speed it expects, it logs the error. The usual symptom is a fridge that drifts warm while the freezer stays perfectly cold, sometimes with a clicking, whirring or ticking noise from the back of the cabinet.

What E16 looks like on a Blomberg fridge freezer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Blomberg fridge freezer, E16 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Fridge freezer door won't open
  • Door won't lock or click shut
  • Door lock light flashing
  • Door stuck shut with the load inside
  • Won't start even with the door closed
  • Fridge freezer not draining
  • Water left in the machine at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Ice built up around the fan so the blades are jammed
  • Food, packaging or a bag pushed hard against the internal air vents
  • Worn or seized fan motor
  • Wiring or connector fault between the fan and the control board
  • Control board misreading the fan's speed signal

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Move food away from the vents at the back and sides of the fridge so air can circulate freely — an overpacked fridge is a common trigger
  2. Look for a build-up of frost or ice around the vents or the back wall of the fridge; if there is a lot, empty the appliance and let it defrost fully with the door open before switching back on
  3. Check the door is closing and sealing properly and nothing is holding it ajar
  4. Switch off at the wall for a minute and back on — if the fan was only briefly stalled, the fault can clear
  5. Give the fridge a few hours after any of the above to see whether the temperature comes back down

Which Blomberg models show E16

E16 means the same thing on this model. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
