ElectriQ E50 tumble dryer: what it means & what to check

What E50 actually means

The board that drives the drum motor has spotted something it doesn't like — a bad voltage, too much current, or a motor it can't get a proper speed signal from — so it has shut the cycle down.

These machines use a brushless (BLDC) motor with its own inverter board, and E50 only appears on that type of motor. The inverter board constantly watches its supply voltage, the current it is pushing to the motor and the speed signal coming back; if any of those readings fall outside the expected range, or its communication with the main control board breaks down, it stops rather than carry on. In practice the drum either won't turn at all or stops shortly after starting.

What E50 looks like on a ElectriQ tumble dryer

What usually causes it

Mains supply voltage too high or too low at the machine
Drum or motor stiff or jammed, overloading the inverter board
Faulty inverter board — damaged components, over-current or false temperature readings
Poor connection or communication between the main control board and the inverter board
Inverter board not seated properly in its housing

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall socket for a minute, then switch it back on and try a short cycle — genuine one-off voltage dips can clear this way.
Plug it straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead, adaptor or portable generator, which can give an unstable supply.
Take out some of the load if the drum was packed tight, and check nothing has fallen down beside the load and wedged the drum.
With the machine switched off at the wall, open the door and turn the drum by hand — it should move freely and without grinding or stiffness.
