What E61 actually means

The control board has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum motor is turning, so it has shut the cycle down.

The motor has a small speed-sensing device on it that constantly reports back to the main control board. If the board sees the motor running but the reported speed sits below about 15rpm for three seconds, and that happens five times over, it gives up and posts E61. It is a feedback fault rather than a heating or draining fault, so you'll usually see it when the drum should be turning \

What E61 looks like on a ElectriQ tumble dryer

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a ElectriQ tumble dryer, E61 usually shows up as one or more of these:

  • Machine not draining
  • Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
  • Stops mid-cycle full of water
  • Standing water in the bottom
  • Not drying
  • Blowing cold air
  • Clothes still damp at the end
  • Takes hours to dry

Recognise any of those? That is this fault, and the rest of this page explains what causes it and what you can check yourself.

What usually causes it

  • Loose or partly disconnected plug on the motor's speed-sensing device
  • A failed speed sensor on the motor itself
  • Damaged motor windings or brushes, so the drum never reaches speed
  • A poor connection at the main control board
  • Failed control board electronics driving the motor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and restart a cycle \
  2. Take a heavy or badly tangled load out and try again with a smaller load, in case the drum was being stalled

Which ElectriQ models show E61

E61 means the same thing on all 2 of these models. If yours is not listed, the explanation above still applies — the code is set by the control board, not the model number.
